• DuraFlex SW (smooth wall) and DW (double wall): These use different cap diameters. SW caps fit 3-inch to 8-inch inner diameters; DW caps run 5-inch to 8-inch outer diameters. The wrong cap will seat poorly and leak.
• Part number location: Check the stamped collar on your existing cap or the installation tag left by the original installer. DuraFlex part prefixes are DFC for standard caps, DFC-HT for high-temp applications over 1,000°F.

You can safely check whether your cap is loose by sight from the ground or a window, using binoculars. Do not climb the roof. Haverhill’s slate and asphalt roofs are steep, and fall weather brings morning frost that lingers in shade until noon.

Where DIY goes wrong: DuraFlex caps require precise torque on stainless clamp bands. Over-tighten and you deform the liner collar; under-tighten and the cap lifts in the next nor’easter. The mesh screen must sit at exact clearances to maintain draft, and the sealant at the collar needs to be rated for 600°F continuous, not hardware-store silicone.
