Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. On cable-operated Gelco models, the set screw at the handle hub loosens over time, or the cable frays where it enters the frame channel. The plate itself may be fine; the linkage is what’s failed.
• The damper drops open on its own after you close it. The counterweight on cast-iron Gelco units corrodes in Haverhill’s freeze-thaw cycles, throwing off the balance. We see this most often on north-facing flues where condensate sits.

Cable tension on the stainless models is calibrated to 35 pounds; overtightening kinks the housing.
